A Chiang Mai border patrol policeman has been charged with smuggling more than 20,000 ya ba pills said Pol Maj Gen Chamnan Ruadrew, the Deputy Commissioner of Provincial Police Bureau, Region 5, on August 11.

At the meeting room of Chiang Mai Provincial Police Headquarters, Pol Lt Maj Gen Chamnan, was accompanied by police and military officers who had jointly arrested Police Senior Sergeant Major Wasan Wisarutwessaphu, 45, of Tambon Nongharn, San Sai District.

Following a tip off, the 335th BBP Command, Pha Muang Task Force, Chiang Dao police and local authorities set up a checkpoint at Tambon Muang Na, Chiang Dao district on Aug. 10 which stopped Senior Sergeant Major Wasan who was driving a Toyota pickup truck. 

During the search that followed, police said they discovered a total of 22,000 ya ba pills in his pickup. The police then seized Police Senior Sergeant Major Wasan’s pickup, a 9 mm pistol and two mobile phones which were also found during the search. 

Senior Sergeant Major Wasan’s house, land, car and cash totaling three million baht have also been seized by the authorities.  

Senior Sergeant Major Wasan was said to have previously had an outstanding record with the BBP police for drug suppression and held the position of BBP police commander at the 33rd Border Patrol Police Headquarters.  

Police say that Senior Sergeant Major Wasan has now confessed he was hired by Mr Chai (surname unknown) whom he described as a drug dealer who is a Hmong hill tribesman from Ban Huayleuk, Tambon Pingkhong, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai. 

Senior Sergeant Major Wasan said he was to deliver the ya ba pills to dealers in Chiang Mai and that he was being paid 275,000 baht to conduct the smuggling trip. 
After Senior Sergeant Major Wasan was detained, police searched his house where they said they found a further 2,000 ya ba pills.
